I was able to get out the 4wt and chase some gills and crappie today. The bluegills are up staging for spawn and going good in a lot of the Duluth area lakes. We managed alot of bull males up to 11" inches, but mainly in the 9-10 range, plus all the smaller ones in the mix. Had a blast for a few hours of fishing. Also picked up some nice sized crappies in the mix. We used mainly bead head wooly buggers with small strips and pauses. Had some relatives over, cooked up some crappies and washed it all down with good ale.....dinner was good and got a little fly fishing in to boot.
This is a good time to introduce anyone to the art of fly fishing, especially younger ones. Bluegills and sunfish are always eager to bite and put up a good fight, especially this time of the year when there are numbers of bigger panfish all congregated together.
Be safe out there and tight lines!
